Marie Samuels was born in Calgary, Alberta, in 1912 and raised in Edmonton, Alberta, after her family moved there several years later. Her father was a writer of Yiddish stories and wrote particularly about early Jewish fur traders, trappers, and settlers. Became interested in drama and through her involvement with local theatre met Elizabeth Sterling Haynes in the early 1930's. Along with Ms. Haynes, M. Samuels helped build
Studio Theatre in Alberta which started in a quonset hut on the grounds of the University of Alberta. M. Samuels appeared in a number of plays, and assisted
Elizabeth Sterling Haynes while she directed various productions. Established a scholarship in drama at the University of Calgary in the name of Elizabeth Sterling Haynes in 1990.
Fonds consists of correspondence, photographs, stage design, newsclippings, brochures and programs for various drama productions.
