Special Collections
Named in memory and honour of composer and educator Dr. Richard Johnston whose enthusiasm and tireless work on the development of the Canadian music archives, the collection is the second major focus area for Special Collections. The Richard Johnston Canadian Music Archives Collection documents and preserves the historical development of Canadian musical heritage in archival fonds from composers and musicians of national and international stature. In addition there are archival fonds relating to folk music research by Canadians such as Edith Fowke and by Canadian societies well known in the field. Several fonds have been acquired reflecting the historical aspects of music education in Canada which have been of particular interest to the University of Calgary’s Department of Music.
